This weekend saw the IJF stage the Refereeing and Coaching Seminar ahead of the World Tour returning later this week.

British Judo was represented by referees Lisa Rivers, Stefan Newbury and Mark Waterhouse.

The weekend saw referees, coaches and experts from the IJF meet in Gyor, Hungary, to discuss techniques and tactics so that everyone is aligned ahead of the Olympic season starting in Portugal this coming weekend.

Refereeing rules were at the centre of the discussions and the IJF Referee Commission detailed all the rules which will be applied in the coming months. The main take away was that there are no changes to refereeing in the lead-up to Paris 2024 and the rules will continue, in line with what was observed in 2023 and since Tokyo 2021.

The Commission did however provide clarification on certain areas. Ushiro sankaku – shimewaza and kansetsuwaza is valid whilst oseakomiwaza is a Hansokumake.

The two day event was supported by a variety of quality video examples that allowed everybody to get up to speed and work together. For those that were unable to attend in person, the event was also streamed, meaning everybody was able to learn ahead of what promises to be an exciting year for the sport of judo.
