Charlie Ayre Nominated for Athlete of the Month

British Judo is delighted to celebrate Charlie Ayre’s nomination for the British Elite Athletes’ Association (BEAA) Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award for June 2026.

Charlie earns his place on the four-athlete shortlist following a sensational breakthrough performance at the Qingdao Grand Prix, where he claimed the first IJF World Tour medal of his career with a superb silver medal in the -60kg category.

The Tees Valley Judo athlete produced a series of outstanding performances throughout the day, defeating world-class opposition before battling his way into his first-ever IJF World Tour final. Along the way, he overcame Brazil’s world number six Michel Augusto and France’s Enzo Jean in a dramatic golden score semi-final.

Although he narrowly missed out on gold against Japan’s Hayato Kondo, Charlie’s silver medal represents a significant milestone in his career with the result coming just weeks after his selection to represent Team England at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The BEAA Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award is particularly special as it is voted for by current and former elite British athletes, making the nomination recognition from Charlie’s fellow high-performance competitors across more than 40 sports.

Charlie joins a strong shortlist alongside triathlete Oliver Conway, para-archer Amelia Blagg and sailor Emma Wilson, with the winner to be decided by a vote of BEAA members.

From everyone at British Judo would like to wish Charlie the best of luck in the vote!
