British Cadets Secure Five Medals at Riga Cadet European Cup

It was a successful weekend for several British cadets at the 2026 Riga Cadet European Cup in Latvia, with the team securing five medals, including two golds, two silvers and a bronze.

Louie Seguin (Tonbridge JC) secured his best-ever European Cup result, taking gold in the -50kg category after an impressive run through the draw.

Having made his European Cup debut earlier this year, Seguin has already competed at five events, previously securing a seventh-place finish in Poreč. He built on that result in Riga, producing a series of dominant performances to reach his first European Cup final.

He opened his campaign with an ippon victory in the Round of 16 in just over a minute. He continued his impressive form in the quarter-final, taking a yuko lead after just seven seconds before securing ippon 30 seconds into the contest.

Making his first semi-final appearance at this level, Seguin showed no signs of nerves, winning with ippon in just 28 seconds to book his place in the final.

There, he faced fellow Brit Ashwin Yoganathan (Samurai Olympic JC) in an all-British -50kg final. After a hard-fought contest between the two judoka, Seguin came out on top to claim the gold medal.

Yoganathan also enjoyed an excellent result, taking silver on his European Cup debut. The Samurai Olympic JC judoka fought his way through the draw from the Round of 16 to reach the final and secure a medal at his first event at this level.

Katrina Davis (Sakura JC) claimed gold in the -44kg category, achieving her best European Cup result to date after finishing fifth in Poreč and seventh in Rome earlier this year.

With a smaller entry in her category, Davis needed just one victory to reach the final. She secured her place in the gold medal contest with a win by two yukos before going on to take the title with a waza-ari-awasete-ippon victory in the final.

Harry Egleton (Bishops Stortford JK) took silver in the -55kg category, securing his first European Cup medal in just his second appearance at this level.

Competing in a busy weight category, Egleton began his day in the Round of 64 and fought his way through six contests to reach the final. He produced a series of strong performances throughout the day, showing his quality against a succession of opponents. Although he narrowly missed out on gold in the final, his silver medal marked an excellent achievement.

Maisie Broadley (Stewart JA) claimed Great Britain’s fifth and final medal of the weekend, taking bronze in the -52kg category to secure her best European Cup result to date.

The medal was a reward for a busy year of competition, during which Broadley has contested six Cadet European Cups and made her second appearance at the Cadet European Championships.

She began with a strong win in the Round of 16 before suffering a quarter-final defeat that sent her into the repechage. Showing excellent resilience, Broadley won both repechage contests to earn her place in the bronze medal fight. She battled into golden score before eventually securing the victory and a place on the podium.

Evie Mitchell (The Parks JC) rounded off the British team’s results with a fifth-place finish in the -57kg category. Although she narrowly missed out on a medal, Mitchell secured her second consecutive fifth-place finish at a European Cup, building on her silver medal at the Poreč Cadet European Cup earlier this year.

Congratulations to the whole team on an excellent weekend of competition in Latvia!
