Regular Gradings Driving Retention Success at Melbourn Judo Club
May 28, 2026

Creating an environment where members stay engaged, motivated and connected is something many successful judo clubs prioritise—and Melbourn Judo Club is a fantastic example of this in action.
The club currently reports an impressive 76% membership retention rate with regular grading opportunities playing a key role in keeping members motivated and invested in their judo journey.
By combining a strong community atmosphere with clear progression pathways, Melbourn has developed an approach that continues to deliver excellent results.
At Melbourn, gradings are embedded into the rhythm of club life, giving members regular opportunities to demonstrate progress and work towards their next milestone.
As Iain Reid (Head Coach) explained, “We generally put our gradings in so that people know that there’s always potentially going to be a good thing at the end of the month.”
Rather than waiting several months between assessments, Melbourn uses smaller, more frequent grading groups that fit naturally within the club structure.
This approach means members can progress at a pace that reflects their attendance, effort and development.
The enthusiasm this creates is clear.
“We get a lot of them asking all the time, ‘When am I grading next?’”
For many young judoka, visible progress is a huge motivator. Melbourn has found that regular opportunities to move forward help maintain excitement, encourage technical development and reinforce long-term commitment to the sport.

The club’s continual assessment approach means coaches are consistently observing members’ progress, identifying when individuals are ready to take their next step. Combined with the colour belt system, this creates a clear and rewarding journey for members to follow.
As Iain shared, “It is a ladder that you can work your way up… you can see your progression.”
Melbourn’s impressive retention figures are supported by detailed membership analysis. The club calculates retention as:
Members renewing in the last year ÷ Members due to renew in the same period
Using membership data collected through NEST and myMA, Melbourn has built a robust model tracking:
- Month-on-month membership changes
- Three-year membership trends
- Changes by age band
- Changes by belt colour

This insight helps the club better understand member behaviour and continue refining the experience they offer.
Alongside its structured progression model, Melbourn credits its welcoming culture as another important part of its success.
The club describes itself as more than simply a contest-focused environment, instead placing strong emphasis on creating a social, supportive community where members feel they belong.
“We’ve tried to make it more of a social community type club.”
That combination of community, opportunity and progression has helped create an environment where members want to stay involved for the long term.
With former junior members returning after university and younger judoka eager for their next challenge, Melbourn Judo Club is a brilliant example of how thoughtful club development can help members thrive.
