Goginashvili Secures Career-Best 5th Place at Ulaanbaatar Grand Slam

In a tough weekend of international competition for Great Britain, one British judoka delivered an outstanding performance, securing a 5th-place finish at the Ulaanbaatar Grand Slam. This result continues his impressive run of form and marks his best-ever finish at a Grand Slam event.

Irakli Goginashvili (Palavani) fought his way to the bronze medal contest in the -73kg category in Mongolia, building on recent successes that include silver at the La Nucia/Benidorm European Open and gold at the Kaunas Junior European Cup.

At just 19 years old, this was only Goginashvili’s second appearance at Grand Slam level, having previously competed at the Paris Grand Slam earlier this year.

Starting his campaign in the Round of 32, Goginashvili produced a series of excellent performances to progress all the way to the semi-finals. One of the standout moments of his day came in the Round of 16, where he faced Lasha Shavdatuashvili (GEO), a former Olympic champion, Olympic silver and bronze medallist, world champion, and current European champion. Defeating such a decorated opponent at just 19 years of age was a remarkable achievement and undoubtedly provided a major confidence boost.

In the semi-final, Goginashvili faced Ankhzaya Lavjargal (MGL), a World Championships bronze medallist and the current world number one in the -73kg division. The contest was a tense and closely fought battle that went into golden score. Goginashvili matched his opponent throughout, but after more than eight minutes of action, Lavjargal secured the ippon victory. Despite the loss, reaching the final block marked a significant milestone in Goginashvili’s young career.

In the bronze medal contest, he faced world number three Victor Skrylev (BUL) in another intense match that once again went into golden score. After eight and a half minutes, the Bulgarian secured the win, leaving Goginashvili with a 5th-place finish, his best result at this level and equalling his top performance on the IJF World Tour.

This was an incredible performance from the young British judoka and a result that signals an exciting future ahead!
