Heavyweights Suffer Early Exits on Final Day of World Championships

Heavyweights Sarah Adlington and Philip Awiti-Alcaraz both suffered early exits in the final day of the 2013 Judo World Championships in Rio.

Adlington, who took her first Grand Slam medal in Moscow a few weeks ago in the +78kg category, was disqualified after receiving four shidos whilst being a yuko behind against her opponent Eun-Kyuong Kim of South Korea.

Young Philip Awiti-Alcaraz then made his world championships debut in his first year as a senior. The 20-year-old -100kg fighter, who received a bye in the first round, started strongly against his opponent Martin Pacek, but the more experienced Swede, with a Grand Slam bronze medal under his belt, led by a waza-ari until in the third minute when Awiti was thrown for ippon.
