Young Judoka Adam Thorius Making His Mark at South Shields JC

Adam Thorius began his judo journey after taking part in an after-school taster session at his school, delivered by South Shields Judo Club (SSJC). What started as a short introduction soon grew into a real passion for the sport.

South Shields Judo Club first partnered with Adam’s school in 2010, and 15 years later, coaches Tommy and Beth Foster are still running taster sessions there, helping young people in the community discover judo.

After joining the club, Adam quickly settled in and began training regularly. Now, nearly three years on, he has become a key member of the team, earning a place in the club’s advanced class.

He’s the youngest and smallest member in that group, but his determination stands tall.

Adam was also the first SSJC judoka to complete all of the Sho grades, a testament to his commitment and hard work.

He regularly trains each week and rarely misses a class. Recently, he’s taken part in U8s judo festivals, both hosted at South Shields Judo Club and away at Middlesbrough Judo Club.

He also joined a club visit to Tees Valley Judo Club, where he showcased his skills with new training partners.

In January 2025, Adam took part in a Neil Adams masterclass, an experience he thoroughly enjoyed and one that added to his growing list of judo highlights.

Speaking about his judo journey so far, Adam said: “I love judo!”

“I have been doing it since I was five years old, and I’m very happy to have gotten all 9 of my sho grades.

“I enjoy coming to the judo club on a Tuesday and learning new things”

It’s fantastic to see not only how well you’re doing, Adam, but how much you’re enjoying the journey too. Keep it up!
