Update on U12 Technical Rules – Second Pilot Completed

This weekend saw the successful delivery of the second pilot of the revised U12 technical restriction rules at Bishops Stortford Judokwai, following an initial pilot held in September.

The proposed updates—developed through consultation with coaches and focused on supporting long-term technical development and creating a safer learning environment—continue to receive strong support. Feedback from the first pilot highlighted how the rules encouraged more fundamental, sleeve-and-lapel based judo and improved the overall experience for young judoka, coaches and parents alike.

Early feedback from this second pilot has been equally positive. Coaches and referees observed an increase in positive attacking judo, supported by the removal of the ability to win contests on penalties. There was also a noticeable reduction in hesitation from athletes, with less fear of being countered or dragged backwards—encouraging more forward, standing throwing techniques.

Importantly, the focus on safety continues to show clear benefits. There were fewer instances of children being placed in dangerous situations, such as being spiked on their head or unable to safely breakfall. In addition, the day ran more smoothly overall, with a significant reduction in golden score contests and the removal of appeals contributing to a more efficient and consistent competition environment.

In particular, coaches welcomed the emphasis on safe throwing practices, the removal of higher-risk techniques such as sutemi-waza and drop knee attacks, and the clarity around gripping rules. These changes were seen as helping to build strong technical foundations while prioritising participant safety.

Following continued refinement and discussion with the National Refereeing Commission, we are hopeful that these pilots will help us validate the rules ahead of wider implementation.

We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the judo community to ensure these changes support positive development experiences for all young judoka.
