Sherrington enjoys silver success in Cuba en route to Rio
June 08, 2014
Royal Marine and London 2012 Olympian secured a superb silver with ippons all the way to the final at the Havana Grand Prix, starting him well on his campaign towards qualification for Rio 2016.
Scottish-based Sherrington (+100kg) first beat Cuban Arlendy Morales and then claimed victory over Georgian Adam Okashvili to book a place in the semi-final with another Georgian in the shape of Levani Matiashvili. This respectable result puts him in pole position ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
In the Havana final, Sherrington met Renat Saidov of Russia and was denied gold as he lost by waza-ari. Saidov is a foe he last faced at the Judo World Cup in Apia, Samoa, where the Briton also took silver.
