Qualification Changes to British Championships From 2026

British Judo is pleased to confirm an update to the entry process for the Senior and Junior British Championships moving forwards.

The changes are designed to strengthen the prestige of the event and ensure the nation’s premier domestic competition showcases the country’s highest-ranked athletes.

Following the conclusion of the 2025 British Championships, the event will move to an invitation-only format for both the Senior and Junior categories.

For the Senior British Championships, invitations will be issued to the top 16 athletes in each weight category based on the British Ranking List. A limited number of wildcard invitations may also be awarded at the discretion of British Judo.

For the Junior British Championships, invitations will be extended to the top 20 athletes in each weight category from the British Ranking List, with a number of wildcard entries also available.

The changes aim to further enhance the standard of competition at the British Championships while recognising consistent performances throughout the ranking season. Athletes will now compete throughout the year not only for ranking points but also for the opportunity to secure their place at one of the most prestigious events on the domestic calendar.

Further details regarding the qualification period, invitation process, wildcard criteria and event regulations will be published in due course.
