Promotion for Waterhouse in Malaga

British Judo is pleased to report that referee Mark Waterhouse has been successful in passing his Continental Referee / IJF B examination, joining a select group of nine internationally active British IJF referees.

Mark was promoted following a theory and practical examination conducted over three days by representatives from the European Judo Union and International Judo Federation at the Malaga Senior European Cup this past weekend. He was presented with his ‘blue badge’ by EJU Head Referee Cathy Mouette.

Mark’s promotion strengthens our refereeing team in Great Britain, where Mark continues to focus on the development of referees throughout the Eastern area. Mark’s commitment to refereeing has been a long one, he gained his first refereeing award in 1994.

Speaking after receiving his promotion, Mark said: “The journey from my Area award to today has been a total rollercoaster. It may have taken me almost three decades to get here, but I look back and have so many great memories. The support, advice and training we have throughout the UK is unparalleled and I am so happy to realise this dream.”

“I won’t name-check here as this webpage has limits but whether we have interacted as a referee, a coach or an athlete, thank you for your support.”

Keith Merrick, National Referee Commission Acting Chairman and staff lead for refereeing added: “I was absolutely delighted when I heard Mark had achieved his primary judo goal.

“Mark has put tremendous time, work and finance into this over the last few years and despite a few setbacks and a high-pressure job, which takes him out of the country, Mark always came back stronger and more determined. I really admire those people who stick to the task and make things happen as they want them to. I wish Mark a very healthy IJF referee career.”

Congratulations Mark from all at British Judo on your promotion.
