We regret to announce the death of distinguished high-ranking 6th Dan and Senior National Referee, Howard Clarke-Melville.

Howard was a former member of the Senior National Squad and represented GB internationally, whilst also representing the London Area for many years, showcasing his competitive prowess at the highest levels thanks to years of dedicated training and expertise.

After retirement from international competition, he became very involved in running Stratford Judo Club, demonstrating a commitment to nurturing the next generation of judoka. He served on the London Area Committee for many years and was London Area Head Referee until standing down last year after an accident.

He remained committed and active in Judo, attending Kata courses and even competing in National Masters competitions where he was known for his memorable and inspirational throws, even at a later stage in his career – winning his category and becoming National Masters Champion in 2022.

Howard possessed a positive attitude and mindset, offering guidance and support to all he encountered. Howard will be remembered for his skill, dedication, sportsmanship, and positive impact on others. He will undoubtedly be remembered fondly by all who knew him and his catch phrase – he would always wish you an “Outstanding Day“.
