Obituary: Don Turnbull

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Don Turnbull, a beloved National B referee, coach, and cornerstone of the British Judo community, at the age of 88.

Don’s impact on the mat spanned over 60 years. From founding the Post Office Judo Club in 1965 and later established the Hurst Judo Club (now known as the AWE Judo Club) in 1976. to his tireless work as a referee and committee member for Hampshire Judo, Don was the definition of “grassroots” dedication.

Even in his 80s, he remained a fixture at competitions, ensuring the next generation of judoka competed with fairness and respect.

His calm presence and lifelong service were recognized in 2013 with his 1st Dan, but his true legacy lives on in the countless lives he mentored.

In 2015 BJA Don was awarded the prestigious Referee of the Year award at the BJA annual awards.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Don.
