Mitchell Takes 5th as Shattock Finishes 7th on Day 2 of the Cadet European Championships
June 30, 2026

On day 2 of the 2026 Cadet European Championships, Evie Mitchell (The Parks JC) produced a top performance in Gran Canaria to secure fifth place in the -57kg category, while teammate Maisie Shattock (Bacup JC) also impressed, finishing seventh in the same weight class.
Mitchell started her day in strong fashion, winning her round of 32 contest by ippon in just one minute and 30 seconds. She continued her dominant form in the round of 16, opening the scoring with a yuko after just 15 seconds before adding two waza-ari scores in the following minute to book her place in the quarter-final.
In the quarter-final, Mitchell faced a setback in a tightly contested golden score battle, narrowly losing by yuko and dropping into the repechage rounds.
Showing excellent character and resilience, she responded strongly, winning her first repechage contest by holding her opponent down for ippon, before repeating the feat again to secure her place in the bronze medal contest on her Cadet European Championships debut.
In the final block, she faced 2025 EYOF medallist Julia Siemko in another closely fought contest that went into golden score. After an incredibly tight battle, it was the Polish judoka who came out on top, leaving Mitchell to finish in fifth place, an impressive result on her debut at the competition.
This result builds on an already strong year for Mitchell, who claimed silver at the Poreč Cadet European Cup in February, further underlining her progress in her first year on the cadet European Cup circuit.

Shattock also produced an encouraging performance throughout the day in the same division. The Bacup JC judoka opened her campaign with a tough Round of 32 draw, where she was defeated by Siemko, who would go on to claim a bronze medal.
Given a second chance in the repechage, Shattock responded well, putting together two strong wins to progress to the final stage of the repechage rounds. Although she narrowly missed out on a place in the bronze medal contest, she showed strong composure and attitude throughout the day, finishing in seventh place in her second appearance at the Cadet European Championships and building on her experience from 2025.
It is great to see both Mitchell and Shattock competing with and pushing the very best in the -57kg category at this calibre of event; both are certainly ones to watch for the future.
The team also recorded another seventh-place finish on day 1 of the event, as Reece Blackshaw (Penistone JC) secured 7th in the -55kg category. He opened Great Britain’s campaign in Gran Canaria in excellent fashion, building on a strong year that has already included seventh place at European level in Rome and gold medals at both the English and Northern Ireland Opens.
Congratulations to the whole team so far for a series of excellent performances!
There is still one British fighter left to compete at the event, as Zoe Galbraith takes on the -70kg category on day 3 of the competition. Good luck, Zoe!
