Martin Rance Becomes first British Coach to Achieve IJF Academy Level 2 Diploma

British Judo is delighted to celebrate a landmark achievement within the coaching community, as Martin Rance becomes the first British coach to successfully achieve the IJF Academy Level 2 Undergraduate Diploma as a Judo Coach (UDJC).

A BJA Level 3 Coach and 5th Dan, Martin is widely recognised for his commitment to the development of judo both on and off the tatami. Alongside his work with Pinewood Judo Club and ProCoach Judo, he plays a key role as NHC Technical and Coaching Lead, supporting the progression of athletes and coaches alike.

The IJF Academy Level 2 qualification represents a significant step in high-performance coach education, combining academic study with practical application at an international standard. Martin’s success highlights not only his personal dedication, but also the increasing engagement of British coaches with global development opportunities.

Reflecting on his achievement, Martin shared:

“I have approx 30 hours spent on the mat training, learning and developing this week, finishing with three practical exams on Tachi-waza, Ne-waza and Katame-no-kata. Prior to this event, it has taken 18 weeks of online learning and tests spread over two semesters.”

“I’m proud to have successfully completed the IJF Academy Level 2 programme – a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience that has helped me grow both personally and professionally as a coach.”

This achievement reflects the wider commitment across British Judo to continuous learning and professional development. Through initiatives such as the Three Steps Safe framework, coaches are encouraged to regularly review, develop, and enhance their practice to provide the best possible environments for judoka at all levels.

Martin’s accomplishment sets a new benchmark for coaching excellence in the UK and serves as an inspiration to others within the judo community to pursue further development opportunities.

On behalf of everyone at British Judo, we extend our congratulations to Martin on this outstanding achievement and look forward to seeing the continued impact of his work within the sport.
