Great Britain Top Medal Table at Historic Lausanne Adapted Grand Slam

The Ecole Mont-Olivet Lausanne Adapted Judo Grand Slam took place last week in Switzerland, marking a monumental moment for adaptive judo as the first IJF World Tour event to allow adaptive judoka to compete alongside the sport’s biggest names on one of judo’s biggest stages.

Great Britain’s adaptive team produced a stunning performance, topping the medal table with eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals. More importantly, it gave the team the opportunity to compete in front of one of the biggest crowds in judo and share the stage with the world’s best athletes.

The gold medals came from Ilyas Khan (-66kg L1), Idris Khan (-81kg L1), Rebecca Lamb (-57kg L1), Saffiyah Khan (-63kg L1), Sean Allan (-73kg L2), George Light (+90kg L2), Siobhan Lloyd (-57kg L2) and Skye Westwood (-63kg L2).

Silver medals were won by Thomas Mawdsley (-66kg L1), Stanley Walker (-73kg L1), Christopher Murphy (-81kg L1), Solomon Rice (-90kg L1) and Nikki McDermott (-57kg L2).

The bronze medals went to Rowan Kinsella (-73kg L1), Kyle Jones (-73kg L2) and Dominic Beesley (-90kg L1).

More significant than the medals themselves was the opportunity for Great Britain’s L1 and L2 judoka to compete at an event they have never previously had the chance to be part of. Fighting on the IJF World Tour stage alongside Olympic and World medallists made for an unforgettable experience and an important milestone in the continued growth of adaptive judo.
