#FightLikeAGirl Festival Brings Judo Community Together in Blackpool

Women and girls from across the judo community came together at Blackpool Sports Centre at the end of July for the latest #FightLikeAGirl Festival, celebrating inclusion, development and participation through a fun and engaging day on the mat.

Organised by Keidokwai Judo Club, the festival aimed to encourage more women and girls to take up judo, celebrate those already involved in the sport and create opportunities for aspiring coaches and role models to inspire the next generation.

Participants of all ages and experience levels enjoyed a varied programme of warm-ups, games, technical skill development and randori, providing an opportunity to improve their skills, build confidence and connect with other judoka from across the region.

Alongside the activity on the mat, the festival brought together a range of organisations committed to supporting women and girls in sport. Representatives from British Judo, Active Lancashire and The Period Coach attended throughout the day, sharing guidance and resources around safeguarding, welfare and menstrual health, while coaches and volunteers from clubs across the county helped deliver sessions and support participants.

A standout feature of the event was the collaborative approach, with clubs, coaches, volunteers and partner organisations working together to create a welcoming environment focused on growing female involvement in judo. The festival also highlighted the importance of female-led coaching, giving participants the chance to learn from and be inspired by women actively contributing to the sport.

Parents and spectators played an important role in creating a positive atmosphere throughout the day, offering encouragement and helping to build a strong sense of community both on and off the mat.

The #FightLikeAGirl Festival showcased the impact of bringing people together to support the continued growth of women’s and girls’ judo, providing a memorable experience where participants could develop their skills, make new connections and enjoy the sport.
