Coaching the Modernised BJA Dan Grade Syllabus – Southern Area Coach Revalidation – 24 May 26 – Bexley
May 24, 2026
The aim of this course is to deliver, discuss and work with the technical requirement of British Judo’s ‘Modernised BJA Dan Grade Syllabus’ in order that coaches can confidently prepare players for 1st to 5th Dan theory examinations. The course is split into 3 modules:
Module 1. Kodokan 100 Waza
The objective of this module is to ensure that coaches have a good understanding of the Kodokan 100 Waza. We will discuss the classification of waza, look at the differences between closely resembled waza, and practice those waza that were not present in the previous BJA Dan Grade Syllabus (exploring both the Kodokan standards and contest variations).
Module 2. Coaching Fundamental Skills
The objective of this module is to ensure that coaches are confident coaching fundamental judo skills. We will look at Nage-waza basics, discuss movement phases and key elements, and practice identifying and demonstrating coaching points for Nage-waza, Katame-waza and transitions.
Module 3. Coaching Performance Skills
The objective of this module is to ensure that coaches are confident coaching performance judo skills. We will discuss coaching methods and styles to promote player creativity, and practice developing combinations, counters, transitions, complex entries and escapes.
