Children’s Mental Health Week 2025

This week is Children’s Mental Health Week, a crucial time to reflect on the well-being of young people and how we can support them.

This year’s theme, ‘Know Yourself, Grow Yourself’, highlights the importance of self-awareness and personal development in mental health.

As part of our commitment to young people’s well-being, we spoke with a member of the British Judo Young Leaders Group to hear their perspectives on mental health and the role judo plays in supporting young minds.

Judo is important to me because it not only helps to keep me fit and healthy, but it also gives me a sense of belonging,” said Izzie, one of our Young Leaders Group members.

“When I am at Judo, I feel included and no different from anyone else, as I can participate in all areas of the sport.

“Judo allows me to have an outlet for my emotions and stresses, so when I’ve had a tough day, I go to training with my friends, and I can channel all of the negativity into the sport.”

Sports provide young people with a structured environment where they can build self-esteem, develop coping strategies, and find a sense of community. Many young athletes experience stress, whether from competitions, school, or personal struggles, but having a supportive team and a positive outlet can make all the difference.

“Mental health for young people is just as important as physical health, said Izzie.

“Judo is a great sport for supporting a young person’s mental health as it promotes self-discipline and offers them something to focus on. As Judo is a paired sport, it can lead to friendships being formed, which ultimately increases self-esteem and confidence.

“The clear progression system used in Judo, through different coloured belts, emphasises individual development. This can boost self-confidence and foster anI can do this’ attitude through the visual signs of progress.

“Through participating in Judo and engaging in physical exercise, an individual’s mental health can improve because they will feel better within themselves.”

Our Young Leaders group is doing incredible work and generating brilliant ideas aimed at making judo a better experience for young players. Their insights and self-awareness perfectly align with this year’s theme,Know Yourself, Grow Yourself’.

As we continue to support and empower young people, we must create environments where they can thrive both mentally and emotionally, and at British Judo we are determined to do so.
