October 26, 2026
British Judo is delighted to announce the appointment of Tahina Akther as an Independent Non-Executive Director (INED) to its Board, bringing a wealth of experience in sports governance, law, risk management and equality, diversity and inclusion.
Tahina joins the British Judo Board following the completion of Alex Slade’s two terms as an Independent Non-Executive Director, bringing more than 20 years of legal expertise alongside an extensive background in leadership and governance across professional sport, charitable organisations and the legal sector.
An accomplished barrister and founder of Wildcat Law, Tahina has built a distinguished career advising businesses, sporting organisations and individuals on complex legal matters, including sports regulation, governance, contracts, arbitration and mediation.
Alongside her legal career, Tahina currently serves as a Non-Executive Director at Hampshire Cricket Board, where she chairs the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee and is the Board’s safeguarding lead. Her work has included collaborating with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on national regulatory projects, strengthening governance frameworks and supporting initiatives designed to increase participation in sport.
Previously, Tahina served as a Director of Scunthorpe United Football Club during a challenging period in the club’s history, playing an instrumental role in navigating significant financial and operational difficulties and helping to secure a more sustainable future for the organisation.
Her experience also extends into the charitable sector, serving as a Trustee of One Community Eastleigh and Chairs its Risk Committee, contributing to the organisation’s governance, financial oversight and risk management.
British Judo Chair Gerry Gualtieri welcomed the appointment, saying:
“We are delighted to welcome Tahina to the British Judo Board. Her extensive experience across professional sport, legal governance and the charitable sector will be a tremendous asset to the organisation.”
“Tahina brings a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing national governing bodies, alongside a clear commitment to inclusion, accountability and good governance. We look forward to benefiting from her knowledge and perspective as we continue to develop and grow our sport.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Alex Slade for his dedication and contribution to British Judo throughout his two terms on the Board. His commitment, expertise and support have been greatly valued, and we wish him every success for the future.”
Tahina’s appointment will further strengthen the British Judo Board, bringing valuable independent insight and expertise as the organisation continues its commitment to good governance, sustainable growth and making judo accessible to communities across the country.
