British Judo selects team for Samsun Grand Prix on Easter weekend

British Judo has selected an eight-strong team to compete at the inaugural Samsun Grand Prix on the north coast of Turkey on Easter weekend of Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March.

Five of the eight-strong team have already been pre-selected for the European Championships next month as Kimberley Renicks, Gemma Gibbons, Natalie Powell, Tom Davis and Chris Sherrington all see action in Turkey.

Montevideo Pan-American Open winner Ashley McKenzie will compete in the -60kg category while fellow Londoner and British Champion Tom Davis sees action in the -81kg field.

Chris Sherrington looks for his first win on the +100kg international stage in 2013 having lost out to Russian opposition at the Dusseldorf Grand Prix and European Open’s in Georgia and Poland.

British champion Kimberley Renicks fights in the -48kg category while older sister Louise competes in the -52kg category.

Fit-again Sally Conway, who marked her comeback with an English Open victory a week ago, returns to the international fold at -70kg.

Dusseldorf Grand Prix gold medallist and world number eight Gemma Gibbons knows that another strong result would confirm that she would be seeded for the European Championships as one of the top eight judoka on the world ranking list.

Wales’ Abu Dhabi Grand Prix silver medallist Natalie Powell competes alongside Gibbons in the -78kg category.

Meanwhile on the same weekend, a 12-strong team will take part in the Sarajevo European Cup in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Montevideo Pan-American Open silver medallist Nathon Burns takes to the -66kg category while English Junior and Senior Open champion Max Stewart battles in the -81kg category alongside British Championships silver medallist Tom Reed.

English Open winner Michael Horley fights in the -90kg competition and will be joined by Paralympic silver medallist Sam Ingram who continues his bid to compete at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games by facing the leading fully sighted judoka on the domestic and world stage.

Montevideo Pan-American Open winner Ben Fletcher and British Junior and Senior Championships winner Philip Awiti-Alcaraz take to the tatami in the -100kg category.

English Junior and Senior Open champion Hayley Willis competes in the -48kg category while London 2012 Olympian and English Open silver medallist Kelly Edwards campaigns in the -52kg category.

Five-time European medallist Sophie Cox competes in the -57kg field alongside Junior European ranking list number one Nekoda Davis.  

Belgium Open bronze medallist Amy Livesey completes the selection at -70kg.
