Tyrrell Takes Bronze at the 2026 Lima Panamerican Open
August 19, 2026

It was a strong day for the three British judoka competing at the Lima Panamerican Open in Peru, with the trio returning to competition just days after their appearances at the Lima Grand Prix.
Rory Tyrrell (Camberley JC) claimed the team’s best result of the day, securing bronze in the -81kg category and equalling his best results of the year to take his third bronze medal of 2026.
A strong opening victory saw Tyrrell progress through to the quarter-finals, where he was knocked into the repechage. With his medal hopes still alive, the Camberley judoka produced a dominant performance in his next contest, scoring three yukos and a waza-ari before finishing the fight with ippon to book his place in the bronze medal contest.
Tyrrell faced a tough challenge in the final block, with his opponent taking an early two-yuko lead. However, the British judoka fought back to score ippon and secure his place on the podium after a hard-fought day in Lima.
The result adds to an impressive 2026 for Tyrrell, who has also claimed bronze at the Sarajevo European Open and Riga Senior European Cup, as well as seventh place at the Warsaw European Open.
Charlie Young (Ryecroft JC) stepped up to the -73kg category from his usual -66kg division and secured seventh place, matching the result he achieved at the Lima Grand Prix just a few days earlier.
An opening victory in the round of 16 saw Young progress to the quarter-finals, where he was defeated by his Austrian opponent. He was unable to progress from the repechage, but his seventh-place finish represents another strong result while competing in a different weight category.
Wesley Greenidge (Enfield JC) also secured seventh place, his best result of 2026 so far, in the +100kg category.
After a hard-fought opening contest, Greenidge progressed to the quarter-finals, where he faced the eventual gold medallist. Defeat sent the British judoka into the repechage, where he eventually exited the competition to finish seventh, securing his best result and first placing of 2026.
Congratulations to all three British judoka on their efforts in Lima!
