Join British Judo’s National Promotions and Gradings Commission

British Judo’s National Promotions and Gradings Commission are on the lookout to fill two positions from suitably experienced BJA members interested in developing, implementing and supporting the BJA grading programmes within the UK.

The Commission has oversight of the Mon & Kyu grade schemes and manages all aspects of the BJA’s Dan Grading Scheme. It is responsible for ensuring that all grading pathways are open and transparent, giving all members equal opportunity for progression through the grades, and providing members with technical support and advice to support quality control and improve technical standards.

As a technically complex role, commission members must have Senior Examiner experience and be a minimum grade of 5^th Dan. They must be prepared to make a significant time commitment to attending a variety of meetings and doing the necessary work the role entails. Knowledge of the BJA’s Dan Grade Scheme and excellent IT and communication skills are essential requirements.

Term limits for BJA Commissions are managed in accordance with UK Sports Code and the BJA’s constitutions, which provide two four-year terms, with the requirement for members to re-stand after the first term.

BJA National Promotions & Gradings Commission – Main Aims

To assist in the development and implementation of the promotions and grading programmes as outlined in the BJA Strategic Plan 2022 to 2025 and detailed in the delivery plans. To review applications for 6th Dan and above to make recommendations to the Board/Board representatives.

Commission Terms of Reference

1. To carry out the policies of the BJA and to maintain and promote membership of the BJA throughout the UK.
2. To assist in the development and implementation of the BJA Dan Grade Promotion Programmes.
3. To make reports and recommendations to the Board on policy and matters related to promotions and Dan grading.
4. To review grading schemes at regular intervals and make recommendations on modifications required.
5. To assist in the recruitment, training and retention of Examiners and volunteers in line with the BJA policies and strategic direction.
6. To review and refine the processes for assessing technical and contest ability in order to award promotions and Dan grades fairly and credibly.
7. To ensure that accurate records are kept of all promotions and Dan grades.
8. To consult with and inform Examiners and Directors of Examiners regarding changes to promotions and grading structures of the BJA.
9. To provide inclusive opportunities for all to gain promotion as specified by the BJA equity plan.
10. To be mindful of health and safety issues regarding the assessment for promotions.
11. To consider and recommend for endorsement, the appointment of voluntary promotions and grading-related positions of each of the BJA National Associations and English Areas, following recommendations from both.
12. To contribute to the development and promotion of the BJA technical programmes.
