These Second & Final Stage Selections have been made and announced within the timelines set out in the 2022 Senior European Championships Selection Policy document being week 14, w/c 4th April.

All selections continue to be dependent on fighters adhering to the BJA’s Performance Programme and Code of Conduct Policy.

This now completes the GB Selections for the 2022 Senior European Championships.

The 2022 Senior European Championships is the first championships in the Paris Cycle.

We have carefully considered selecting a Team that will be competitive and support our aspirations of developing and qualifying both a Men and Women’s Team to medal in Paris 2024.

Our selected Women’s team has been hugely successful over the last cycle, consistently placing and medalling at Grand Slams and climbing the world rankings and for that reason, there is an expectation that a number of the team will medal in Sofia.

In parallel, it is incredibly important that we continue to develop our Men’s programme – our European Championship Men’s Team selection reflects a team in transition as we build towards Paris 2024.

Across the selected team, the Men have had performances and results at past European Championships, u23 European Championships, Junior European Championships and over the last year all have medalled or placed at international level to merit their selection.

We are realistic as to where our Men are currently performing, but there is great belief that our Men’s team will be competitive, and it would not be a surprise to see any of our Men place at these championships.

As we progress through this cycle to Paris 2024 and build towards LA 2028, we expect to see the Men’s team mirror our Women’s team success which will also ensure that we can qualify a Team to compete in the Olympic Mixed Team event.

All selected fighters have the right to “Opt-Out” without judgement and decline their selection and participation at this event due to any concerns they may have around the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

All selected fighters MUST attend the European Preparation Camp including a Team Media Session, which will take place at the British Judo National Training Centre from 19-22 April 2022.  Further details will be circulated by email in due course.

As per the 2022 Senior European Championships selection procedure, all selected fighters MUST compete in Adidas Judogi.  Fighters will be required to supply and fix their own backpatches to their Adidas Judogi and supply their own belt.  It is the responsibility of the selected fighters to ensure that their kits / belts / backpatches meet the EJU/IJF Judogi Regulations.

Full event arrangements including Covid-19 protocols and requirements will be sent to all members of the GB Delegation in due course.

I am sure you will join us in wishing the selected fighters every success at this prestigious event.
