What will happen to events and competitions?

On the basis of the guidance from the Government, it is our interpretation of the advice that British Judo Affiliated Competitions and Events would fall into the category of ‘public gatherings’. Therefore, we strongly advise that Competitions should not run until further advice is released. This reflects our decision to cancel or postpone all events run and managed directly by British Judo for the same period. We will review this on an ongoing basis and continue to provide updates.

It is unlikely that any events/competitions will take place until next year and will be guided by Government guidelines – it is in our Phases 4 & 5 of return.

What will happen with my Coaching Qualification and Coaching Revalidations?

For each member who has an expiry date for the above courses between now and the end of June, we have added a three-month extension onto your expiry date to allow you additional time to book onto a relevant course once they are running again.

What is happening with the Centre of Excellence?

Our athletes are back training at the Centre of Excellence under the “Elite” athlete training exemption.

Will I receive an extension to my membership for the time missed?

We recently updated all members regarding their membership and our plans for extending your membership when the current situation allows.

We extended the expiry dates of all members that kept their membership valid during the first lockdown. We are currently discussing whether we can offer a second extension and whether it is financially viable for the Association.

When will we be able to return to judo?

British Judo has been working alongside Sport England and the DCMS to clarify the latest release of Government advice.

We can now announce that judo clubs can now re-open as of Wednesday 2nd December but must operate within the restrictions of the current Government tiering system. Following the Government’s announcement on Saturday introducing the new  ‘Tier 4: Stay at Home‘, alert level, if you are in a Tier 4 area your judo club/venue will have to close.

This will affect clubs in different ways across the country.

As previously before Lockdown 2.0 was enforced, there is no change from our original Phase 1 guidelines which many clubs adhered to across the country.

With the correct social distancing rules enforced in venues and the current non-contact nature of the training schedules, we are effectively classified once again as an “organised exercise class”.

Tier 4: All clubs/venues must unfortunately close for the foreseeable future.

Tier 3: Classes for under 18s can restart indoors. Sessions for ages 18+ must remain outdoors. Same Household sessions permitted.

Travel restrictions have been brought in across the tier system however we’re awaiting clarification from the government on how this should be interpreted for grassroots sport. Members and coaches must not travel into/out of Tier 4 to train.

I missed one of your online webinars. Can I access a digital recording of the presentations?

Will my BJA membership cover me for outdoor training/training at home via Zoom whilst I cannot train at my club?

Yes – as long as the club follows the Government guidelines. This has been authorised by our insurers too.

Will gradings be on hold or adapted to the new conditions?

Throughout the Covid-19 lockdown periods of 2020, British Judo have been allowing clubs to offer their members a one-off free grading.

This has allowed members to continue their judo journey despite the complications that the pandemic has forced upon our sport.

This initiative is due to end on 31st December 2020, so please ensure that any gradings you intend to complete are submitted before this date.

Any gradings received following this date, will be charged at the standard price.

Just because the club has signed your protocol, doesn‘t mean they’ll abide by them. Will you publish the protocols on the BJA website so parents can make sure clubs are compliant.

The guidelines have and will be continue to be shared with clubs. These can also be found on our Covid-19 Hub. All clubs will be asked to sign a declaration to say they will abide by government and BJA guidelines. They have also been asked to inform parents of what to expect.

Will I need to complete an Athlete Indemnity Form each time I train?

Yes, once the Dojos are allowed to open, it is vital that you complete the indemnity form for each session as your health conditions can change very quickly upon displaying any side effects of Covid-19.

British Judo have teamed up with Proactive to provide our clubs with an exclusive offer for a Digital Covid-19 Symptom Checker.

The Proactive Digital Covid-19 Symptom Checker provides a simple, digital application to enable Club Administrators and Coaches a quick and easy platform to manage their member’s self-assessment prior to every training session. The app can be used to replace the British Judo Indemnity Form that members currently fill out each session, or it can be used alongside.

Coaches have access to a group dashboard showing completed checks as well as notifications in the event that a member is recorded as showing symptoms or restricted from participation.

Government guidelines state in relation to ‘Pre-attendance official symptom check’ that…

“All players, officials, and volunteers…must undergo a self-assessment for any COVID-19 symptoms. No-one should leave home to participate in sport if they, or someone they live with, has symptoms of COVID -19 currently recognised as any of the following…”

Do we have to clean mats between sessions if running 2 or more sessions in a day?

Yes – you will be required to clean the mats between each session.

How will British Judo support clubs during this period?

Our Club team is still available via the usual channels. Any clubs who require help or support during this difficult period can contact their Development Officer in the first instance.

How can we help support our members during this time?

We are working to provide content (workouts, ideas to keep you busy etc) and ideas to help you maintain a good level of fitness and activity away from the dojo and at home to keep a connection with your/our members. Keep an eye out on our social media channels each day for new content that we post.

We’re concerned about the financial impact of closing our club for an unknown period?

We are very aware that closing for this extended period could cause financial concerns for some clubs.
