Centre of Excellence – Less than a week to go for athletes to apply

Athletes have less than a week left to apply for a place at the new British Judo Centre of Excellence, with applications closing on Thursday 12th September.

The new centre, due to open late in 2013 and based at the University of Wolverhampton, Walsall Campus, marks a new-era for the Great Britain Judo programme, providing a central place for the nation’s most promising judoka to be fully immersed in a high performance judo environment and culture.

Additionally, the Centre of Excellence will be the training base for final preparation camps for Junior/Senior European and World Championships and Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Applications will be considered from those athletes who meet the following criteria:

• Applicants must be aged 17 or over on date of application.
• Applicants must be or have been on a Home Nations and/or GB programme at least 12 months prior to application. Players who have been out through injury will be considered.

The centre provides a unique opportunity for athletes to train in a full-time professional training environment which will provide the quality, intensity and volume of training under the supervision of a World Class Coaching Team. Athletes will engage in up to 20hrs of training per week supported with individualised technical/tactical and physiological training programmes aligned to the athlete’s annual competition and training plan.

Additionally, athletes have the option to engage in an education programme where required that will be integrated into the athletes programme.

The centre will also be the focal point for the developing Sports Science and Sports Medicine programme that will support the performance team and athletes.

Centrally located, the British Judo Centre of Excellence combines two Olympic sized contest areas with cutting-edge performance analysis facilities, dedicated strength and conditioning suites and onsite sports science and sports medicine.

Athletes can live on-site (and off-site where appropriate) in serviced en-suite accommodation with the university providing a range of facilities and educational opportunities for athletes to enjoy alongside their full-time individualised judo programme.

The success of the new centre and the programme will be instrumental in preparing for Rio 2016, but more importantly, in developing the next generation of athletes in readiness to perform at the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.

If you wish to be considered for inclusion to the British Judo Centre of Excellence, please complete the application form here and return by 12pm Thursday 12th September 2013.
