Club Assets Policy

Free insurance for club assets such as mats, trophies, scoreboards is available provided clubs register their assets with BJA Head Office on the prescribed form.  The limit of value on the assets is £5,500 and any value greater than that can be arranged directly with Perkins Slade.  The policy has a £250 excess.

If you store or carry equipment from your judo club (judogi, score-boards, etc .)in your home, it is advisable to check that you are covered by insurance for theft or loss as not all home policies provide sports equipment cover. Your standard BJA Club insurance does not include theft or loss of sports equipment. Replacement can be expensive and cause real problems for a club and its members - it's worth checking! If you need advice on Club contents insurance, Perkins Slade, Sports Unit (tel: 0121 698 8000)

Additional Optional Insurance Cover (Further information available from http://www.ps-judo.com )

  • Travel Insurance & Medical Cover for Judo

We strongly recommend that you arrange adequate insurance cover before engaging in any sporting activity whilst travelling or on holiday. You should note that many travel insurance policies exclude cover for certain sporting activities, so you should carefully check the terms of any proposed insurance policy to ensure that it meets your requirements.

  • Physio Care

This is a new policy offering(2011) and may be of interest to those who regularly take part in Judo.
Provides fast access to professionals who will accurately diagnose and effictively treat the injury. Early intervention improves the chances of a full and safe recovery and reduces the chance of recurrence.

SOME "USER FRIENDLY" ADVICE

Any person wishing to attend a BJA club is entitled to up to 4 lessons of "trial membership".

After which you will be required to take out membership with the BJA to maintain your individual insurance, and the opportunity to further your Judo training.

Anyone continuing to attend a BJA club after the 4 lesson"trial period", who does not hold a valid BJA licence will not be insured, and will be refused access to the mat.

If you are still unsure if you will enjoy Judo, you may wish to take advantage of our 'Pay as you Throw' licence that runs for 4 months at a cost of £10 junior & £14 senior.

Alternatively a recreational licence will give you a years membership and entitles you to train, but you can not grade, nor compete on this licence.

To avoid confusion we have to be clear that there is a big difference between making a claim of negligence and disputing (defending) one.

If someone makes a claim for damages they must be able to prove negligence and the onus is upon them to do so. That person, whether a licence holder or not, makes the claim on their own behalf (usually represented by a solicitor). It makes no difference if they are a licence holder or not as they are making the claim and not defending against it.

If a licence holder is charged with negligence (remember this has to be proved by the claimant) and a claim for damages made against them, the BJA insurers will cover the cost of defence and any damages awarded as under the terms of our policy. A member club has the same cover to defend against a charge of negligence and any claim for damages.

If a non-licence holder is charged with negligence (again this has to be proved by the claimant) they must arrange their own defence. On the same incident, the club as well as the non-licence holder may be charged with negligence (must be proved) in which case the BJA club insurance still comes into force to defend the club as above.

Basically, your club will have no problems running the beginners course provided that all due care is taken as I am sure it would be. However, it is obviously in the best interests of non-licence holders to take out a licence as soon as they know they will be continuing to practice so that they have the benefit of BJA insurance cover for their defence.

There are three main areas of insurance cover for BJA licence holders and BJA clubs: Personal Accident, Public Liability and Professional Indemnity.

Personal Accident cover applies to all licence holders and insures against permanent disability.

Members whose job depends upon their fitness to work would be well advised to consider additional accident insurance so that in the event of a serious injury (broken arm or leg) they still had a source of income.  Please contact Perkins Slade if you require guidance.

The BJA public (civil) liability insurance covers individual licence holders and member clubs against charges of negligence in the event of injury or damage.

The situation of the coach is different for, when teaching a class i.e. not in a one to one situation as when players even of different grades practice together, professional indemnity insurance is required to cover the coach against any charge alleging negligence in teaching techniques or practices. Every coach holding a valid BJA Coach Award is automatically covered by the BJA professional indemnity insurance for BJA Club sessions and club activities.

The details included in on this web site are for information purposes only.  The policy documents held by the BJA contain all specific terms and conditions, which may alter periodically.
