Britain had a successful weekend at
both the 2007 Prague World Cup for women and the 2007 Warsaw World
Cup for men – winning a medal at each, a gold from Sarah Clark
(-63kg) and a bronze won by Winston Gordon (-90kg).
European Champion Clark
beat Germany’s Claudia Ahrens, Maryn Gubaryeva of the Ukraine
and 2004 European Champion Sara Alvarez of Spain to reach the
semi final. Alice Schlesinger of Israel didn’t stand in Clark’s
way next, with the Edinburgh player beating the former junior
World medallist by ippon. In the final Clark took the gold from
Poland’s Paulina Rainzuk.
In Warsaw Gordon won bronze
after disposing of Yves Matthieu Dafreville of France in the bronze
medal match. Gordon had a good start winning Tamas Nemeth of Hungary
and Milan Randi of the Slovak Republic but a loss to Japan’s Tatsuki
Masubuchi left him fighting in the repechage. Despite the defeat,
Gordon came back strong to make himself in contention for the
medal. The bronze medal is a good result for Gordon who has recently
returned from injury and the win will put him in good standing
for the European Championships.
Other results at the
weekend were a 7 th from Peter Cousins, who was fighting at -100kg
in preparation for his European Championship appearance, where
he has been selected at the heavier weight. Michelle Rogers also
finished in 7th in the –78kg weight category in Prague.
From
19th - 22nd March a British delegation will attend the EJU Tata
Training Camp, which will take place at the Olympic Training Centre
in Hungary. It will be here at the British European Championships
team will make some of their final preparations.
