Over 140 talented young
judo players are taking part in a four-day training camp at Sheffield’s
English Institute of Sport, which will bring England’s brightest
talent together with their international counterparts.
The 70 English players
at the camp, which is taking until Sunday 7th January, are aged
between 14 and 17, and members of the British Judo Association's
World Class Start Programme (England), which develops talented
youngsters who have the potential to represent their country on
the world stage.
Joining them in Sheffield
will be the national teams of Spain and Belgium, Scotland, Ireland
and Wales , as well as a club team from Holland.
“When we travel internationally
to camps and competitions we are often restricted on the amount
of players we can take,” explains World Class Start Manger, Rowena
Birch.
“However, this camp will
give us the opportunity to give a greater a number of our players
exposure to the top international players in their age group.
This is invaluable as we prepare for the European Youth Olympics
and the European Cadet Championships”, she added.
The camp will see a host
of world-class coaches take the mat, including double Olympic
medallist, Neil Adams MBE, former World Champion Graham Randall
MBE, and former European Champion Rowena Birch.
