2009 England Squad Identification

The England Squad Program will replace the current World Class Start Program at the end of October 2008 and will include players up to 20 years old.

At the same time, the World Class Talent Squad will be renamed the England Talent Development Squad, and will also include players up to 20 years.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible, players must meet the following criteria:

  • Be Resident in England, born in England or have a parent born in England.
  • Be a BJA license holder
  • Hold a British passport
  • Hold a minimum grade of 10th Mon (green belt)
  • Aged between 12 and 19 years

Routes for Identification

 

The 2009 England Squad will be identified at the end of October 2008 using the following criteria:

•  Performances in identification events.

Pre-Cadet Group -15 years (players born in years 1996, 1995) and Cadet Group -17 years (born 1994, 1993)

Identifications events are the Heart of England Championships 08 and the British Championships 08 for players aged 12, 13 and 14, 15. Points will be allocated (Gold –1000, Silver-600, bronze 400). These will give an indication of a players overall performance in the identification events.

Junior Group – 20 years (players born in 1992, 1991, 1990)

For the players born in 1992, 1991, 1990, the main identification event is the British Championships 08. As this is a transition year, with the incorporation of an additional year to the age group, points are not allocated for the Heart of England but results will be considered.

Gold medalists in the British Championships will gain automatic entry into the program in all age groups.

•  Representation at the European Cadet Championships 08 or Junior European/ World Championships Players who have represented Great Britain at these events will gain automatic entry.

•  Long Term Potential. Players with long term potential, as identified by the current World Class Start coaches. Previous performances in events in the existing World Class Start Calendar and British Junior/Senior Squad activities during 2008 will be considered, as will Technical, tactical, physical, mental and lifestyle attributes.

More players may be included in the stronger weight categories and less in others as appropriate.

Selection Criteria-England Talent Development Squad

Eligibility

•  Member of England Squad (-17 or -20 age group)

•  Born in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 or 1994

•  Ability to meet the minimum fitness requirement*

-17 England Talent Development Squad Criteria (for players born 1993, 1994)

Places will be allocated to players who have met the eligibility requirements above and have achieved the either of the following

•  No. 1 ranked British player in each weight after Heart of England Championships 08 and British Championships 08 (i.e. players with the most combined points from the two events, gold = 1000 pts, silver = 600 pts, bronze = 400 pts).

•  Gold medallist in British Championships 08

Additional places will be allocated according to the following criteria

•  Performances in events on the existing World Class Start calendar during 2008. Consideration will be given to level of competition, strength of weight category, injury and illness.

•  Perceived long term potential, taking into consideration factors such as technical, tactical, physical, mental and lifestyle attributes.

 

-20 England Talent Development Squad Criteria (for players born 1990, 1991, 1992)

Places will be allocated to players who have met the eligibility requirements above and have achieved the following;

•  Gold medallist in British Championships

Additional places will be allocated according to the following criteria

•  Performances in events on the existing World Class Start calendar and British Junior/Senior Squad activities during 2008. Consideration will be given to level of competition, strength of weight category, injury and illness.

•  Perceived long term potential, taking into consideration factors such as technical, tactical, physical, mental and lifestyle attributes.
