Do
you coach judo in schools?
If
so, the new MonStars scheme could help you reward, motivate and
retain your pupils.
British Schools Judo
has launched the exciting MonStars programme, a redesign of the
STAR Award scheme. The new resource, which contains achievement
booklets, stickers, wall posters and a coach information leaflet,
has been designed to allow schools coaches to regularly reward
their student’s progression as they gain new skills.
The scheme is intended
to be as flexible as possible, allowing the coach to adapt the
scheme to any school environment or skill level.
Although it has been
designed for primary school age groups, coaches can adapt the
levels and material to suit their class age and ability.
When a student has collected
all their stickers for a level, the coach has the additional option
of presenting the student with a certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions (click each question to reveal the answer)
Q. Does this replace my licence?
A. No, this is a reward scheme designed to give regular praise to young people after achieving specific judo skills. Each player will need either a full junior licence or Pay as You Throw licence.
Q. Can any BJA / AJA / BJC coach use the resources?
A. Yes, this is designed as a skill attainment programme and the coach adjusts the level of difficultly depending on the group of young people in that class.
Q. Can it be used for young people with disabilities?
A. Yes, this is perfect for them. This is designed as a skill attainment programme and the coach adjusts the level of difficultly depending on the group of young people on that class.
Q. Why 30 resources and 20 certificates?
A. Standard school classes are approx 30 pupils, therefore, we want everybody to have the opportunity to have a booklet and be able to collect the stickers as they progress with their judo. However, through our pilot programme not all pupils in the class were completing the levels at the same time. The certificates can be given out in assembly as additional reward to the pupils.
Q. Is the programme available in BJA clubs?
A. This is a British Schools Judo resource and we do not want to detract from other long standing BJA club-based programmes i.e. Kano Award Scheme.
Q. Can this be used alongside the BJA Technical Grading Syllabus?
A. If you are a BJA coach, yes. The programme is flexible enough to allow the coach to give MonStar stickers as they progress through the BJA gradings.
