FINAL
PREPARATIONS FOR BRITISH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM BEFORE RIO
The British team for the
2007 World Judo Championships are approaching the final stages
of their preparation before they depart for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
on the 7 th September.
The Championships take
place from the 13 th -16 th September and the stakes are high,
as a medal or 5 th place finish will automatically qualify a place
for the 2008 Olympic Games. This route to Beijing is favoured,
as it will avoid qualification via the remaining European qualification
events.
While the Scottish based
members of the team, James Millar, Matthew Purssey, Euan Burton,
Sarah Clark, Sally Conway and Michelle Rogers are concluding their
training in Scotland, many of the remaining members are rounding
off their preparations at a four-day training camp (28th -31st
August) at the high performance judo centre at the University
of Bath Sports Training Village.
In order to give the team
as much pseudo-competition, with as many different fighters as
possible, an appeal was put out to the wider judo committee asking
that they attend specific training sessions to act as training
partners.
The response so far has
been fantastic as former Olympian Karen Roberts, who is British
Judo’s World Class Operations Manager explains, “Over 100 judoka
attended the sessions over the two days at the Edinburgh Club
this week. It is an inspiration to our team that judoka have travelled
for many, many miles to help in their preparations. I am hopeful
that the response will be the same in Bath next week”.
