Technical restrictions for children's judo under 12 prove to be a success at first event

On Saturday 13 th January the Westmoreland Open became the first tournament to employ new technical restrictions, which came into force on the 1st January.

The BJA are using the new restrictions on a trial basis, following the implementation of new policy for children's events U12, which has started to address issues of "technical quality" within children's judo.

The well-attended event, which took place at Kendal Judo Club, was the third event in a series of three. Although the old rules were employed in the first two events (which obtained their Tournament licences into 2006)  the third fell into the new rules.

Before the event Dave Duffy attended to give the referees a full briefing. There was also a briefing for the coaches, players and parents with Mike Liptrot and Danny Harper demonstrating the techniques that would not be scored.

Commenting Dave Duffy said, “The event ran really efficiently which is a credit the organisers”.

“It was interesting to note that the fast majority of contests on the day were won by ippon throws, and the standard of judo on display was a credit to everyone involved.”

BJA staff will continue to support such events to ensure the applications of these restrictions is standardised.
