British Judo name team for 2006 Polish Junior “A” Tournament

British Judo has announced a 16-strong squad for the Junior Polish “A” Tournament in Cetniewo, Poland, which takes place from 29 th –30 th July.

Junior “A” Tournaments are the equivalent of Senior World Cup events, the highest-level European tournaments outside the European Championships.

The squad for Poland includes Jean-Rene Badrick, who competes in the –66kg weight category. The former European Cadet Champion won bronze at the Youth Olympic Games in 2005, holds the National Age Band title in the –73 kg category, and won bronze at the Junior Portuguese “A” Tournament earlier this year.

Also named in the squad are David Groom, in the –81kg weight category, and Abbie Cunningham, in the +78kg weight category, who have both won two Junior “A” Tournament gold medals in 2006.

Marcus Bascombe and Kimberley Renicks also feature. Both picked up an “A” Tournament gold this year so may prove to be medal hopes.

Bascombe won gold in Portugal, while Renicks finished top in her weight categories in Estonia.

Commenting on the squad, Colin McIver, British Judo High Performance Director said, “The tournament gives an excellent opportunity for our junior squad to come up against the best in Europe outside the major Championships.

“They travel to Poland with the aim of winning medals, but the experience of competing against major competition is also vital.

“We have enjoyed medal success at all the Junior ‘A’ tournaments this year, but what is important is that we continue the momentum in Poland.”
