Japanese Judoka prepare for goodwill contest

Team Bath’s judo players will compete against many of the finest Judoka from Japanese universities in a goodwill contest at the Sports Training Village on Thursday (22nd February). 

The friendly fixture has been scheduled as part of the All Japan University Judo Federation’s European tour and will feature 26 contests in the Sports Training Village’s state-of -the-art dojo.
 
The Japanese students will spend a day in Bath, which will feature the only contest scheduled on the tour.
 
Team Bath will be fielding a strong squad for that highlights the strength and depth of the University of Bath’s high performance judo programme.
 
The line-up includes Sports Performance student Hannah Sinfield in the women’s under-63kg class, in which she recently took bronze in the junior competition at the Belgian Ladies Open - while Gemma Gibbons, fifth at the World University Championships in Korea in December, competes at under-70kg.
 
Both of the Delahay brothers will be in action. Joe, silver medallist at last month’s British Open Championships, competes at over-100kg, while his brother Sam, the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, goes in the under-100kg class.
 
The goodwill match kicks-off at 2.30pm and concludes at around about 4.30pm.
 
In the evening both squads will take part in a Randori.
 
The Japanese squad’s coaching team includes Yoko Tanabe, silver medallist at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games and an old rival of TeamBath Olympian Kate Howey.
