The British Judo Association
has today announced that the 2008 GB World Cup for Women will
now be a one day event held on Saturday 20th September only.
The decision, made in conjunction
with the event’s key funding partner UK Sport, and the European
Judo Union, comes after decreased entry numbers compared to previous
years mean that it is possible for all weight categories to compete
on one day.
It is believed that decreased
entry numbers from some nations is a result of the dates close
proximity to 2008 Olympic Games, and that this year does not act
as an Olympic qualifier.
Despite the change the
BJA, UK Sport, and the European Judo Union are still extremely
confident that the GB World Cup will remain one of the best World
Cups in Europe and be fantastic event for both the competitors
as well as spectators.
There has been good
support for this event in terms of strong ticket sales, but bringing
both days together will ensure the event remains of the same high
standard that people have come to expect from the GB World Cup.
All ticket holders for
Sunday will be contacted by the NIA Ticket Factory and offered
an exchange for tickets for Saturday or a full refund.
Saturday spectators
will now see all the weight categories in action as well as the
special events already planned including demonstrations, the chance
to meet some of judo’s Beijing stars, steel bands, displays and
much more.
