The British Judo Association
has an exciting year of events ahead with the highlight being
the return of the Men’s GB World Cup to be held at the NIA, Birmingham,
in September.
In 2008, the GB World
Cup was reduced to a one day event, but in 2009 it returns to
its familiar two days, and with London hosting the next Olympic
Games, British Judo hopes to attract many top international athletes
to our shores.
The next major BJA event
will be the London British Open to be held at the K2, Crawley
over the weekend of the 2nd & 3rd May 2009. The event has
seen a reduction in international competitor numbers over recent
years, but with London 2012 just around the corner, the BJA are
embarking on a marketing campaign to attract more European judoka.
Following the London
British Open is the 2009 GB World Cup to be held 19th & 20th
September 2009. The last time the men were in action in 2007 the
home crowd helped to inspire great performances from the GB team
including Craig Fallon who went on to win gold.
The British Championships
return on the 10th & 11th October 2009, at iceSheffield. Last
year's Championships saw in excess of 850 judoka compete over
the two days of competition at the Sheffield venue. This year’s
event again promises to provide excellent judo from the countries
young talented players, aged between 12 to 18 years.
Early 2010 will see
the Senior and U20 British Trials return on two consecutive days
of competitive judo for the nations elite judoka, all aiming to
gain their place on the GB national squads. The event will be
held at EIS, Sheffield (TBC) over the weekend of 9th & 10th
January (TBC).
