Bronze for Clark in Lisbon

Edinburgh’s Sarah Clark won a second World Cup bronze in as many months beating Vera Koval of Russia in the –63kg weight category, at the Lisbon World Cup, which took place on the 19th & 20th May.

The weekend’s two World Cups, Lisbon for women, and Bucharest for men, were the last two Olympic qualifiers prior to the World Championships, which will take place in Brazil in September. This will be the most important qualifier as the medallists and those who place in 5 th place, win automatic qualification for Beijing.

Clark’s bronze in Lisbon followed a bronze won in April at the Vejen World Cup, and gold at the Prague World Cup in March. Her performances mean that she is currently ranked in the strong position of 4th in the Olympic qualification rankings.

Also in Lisbon Faith Pitman placed 7th in the -57kg weight category, while Michelle Rogers and Simone Callendar both finished in 5th place in the –78kg and +78kg weight categories respectively.

In Bucharest Matthew Purssey placed 7th in the -73kg weight category, while Peter Cousins missed out on bronze finishing in 5 th place in the -100kg category.

Elsewhere, Britain’s Theodore Spalding McIntosh finished 5th in the +100kg of the Junior French “A” Tournament, which took place in Lyon.
