Since its inception in
1999 Awards for All, a joint lottery grants scheme aimed at local
communities, has awarded over £900,000 to English judo clubs and
during the fiscal year 05-06 more than £94,000 was awarded to
discerning clubs. This scheme is not restricted to England, as
many clubs in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have also benefited
from grants from Awards for All.
Contrary to popular belief
funding is not awarded solely for the supply of new judo mats,
for example:
Enfield Judo Club
was awarded almost £5000 “To develop the profile of
judo in Enfield, especially with girls and also to develop more
young people's skills to represent their country in this sport.
Fordley Judo Club
was awarded over £4000 to enable them to “Purchase new
equipment and send their members on some training courses to improve
their skills.” Mats, judo equipment, first aid courses, coaching
courses, volunteer’s expenses, and judo courses. Were covered
by this grant
Huddersfield Judo
Club was granted just over £500 “To increase membership
through a promotional campaign including visits to local schools
and fetes to give demonstrations.”
Greenbank Judo
Club received almost £5000 “For equipment to ensure
young people can participate in this sport in safety. The money
was used for mats, trolleys, suits in various sizes, training,
mentoring, coach advancement courses and stationery.”
And £5000 went to Halewood
Inclusive Judo Club “To provide opportunities for disabled
people to take part in judo and will be able to become established
by offering weekly opportunities for beneficiaries to take part
in the groups activities and receive professional coaching.”
The list is endless and
now Awards for All have announced that they have increased the
upper limit of the grants they will award to £10,000 to help fund
specific projects or activities in any two-year period.
Could your club benefit
from £10,000? Even if you have received a grant in the past you
can still benefit from a grant now to assist with that project
you have been putting off due to lack of funds. Here are some
of the things that a grant could be spent on:
Publicity materials
Computers
Transport costs
Volunteer’s
expenses
Updating equipment
for health and safety reasons
Sports equipment
Training
In addition to these Awards
for All will now give grants for refurbishment work, and to apply
for a grant could not be easier.
If you are a not-for-profit
organisation, you have a bank account that requires at least two
people to sign each cheque or withdrawal and you can use the grant
within one year, then simply telephone Awards for All on 0845
600 20 40 or text phone 0845 755 6656 to request an application
pack in hard copy or on CD or visit their website at www.awardsforall.org.uk
and download an EAF application form, then send the completed
form to your local A4A office. You should then hear if you have
been successful in about eight weeks.
This is a golden opportunity
for you and your club to access funding to support your volunteers
and coach education and school development programmes and also
to enhance your training facilities to help retain existing members
and attract new members to Judo and to put British Judo back where
it belongs – on the Olympic medal rostrum
For more information or
assistance in completing the application form please contact your
local Club Development Officer.
