British Judo selects five-strong team for VI European Championships at K2 Crawley on 18-20 November

A five-strong Visually Impaired British team will take on Europe’s finest judoka at the 2011 VI European Championships on home soil at K2 Crawley on 18-20 November.

VI World Champion and IBSA World Games gold medallist Ben Quilter will look to add a European title to his international success as he sees action in the -60kg category.

Young brothers Marc and Daniel Powell compete at -73kg and -81kg respectively.

Fellow brothers Sam and Joe Ingram were both selected for the event but unfortunately Joe has had to pull out through injury.

Sam will represent the Ingram family as he aims for more success having medalled at all the biggest events on the VI calendar.

Beijing bronze medallist Sam, a two-time VI World Championship runner-up, takes to the -90kg category with high hopes of a place on the medal rostrum.

Five-time Paralympian Ian Rose has been ruled out through an ACL injury with a scan set to reveal whether the long-term standout requires surgery.

IBSA World Games silver medallist Lesley Reid will bid for her first European medal in the +70kg category.

Paralympic Programme Manager Dave Sanders said: “The team have prepared really well for this event and are all looking forward to competing in front of home crowd at such a major event – the first time many of the players have had the chance to do this.

“With such a strong team and a number of very established medallists, we hope to put on a good show for the crowd.”

Paralympic Performance Coach Jean-Paul Bell said: "I am very excited and looking forward to the team competing on home soil. All of the players have worked hard over the last two years and it is a great chance for them to test themselves against the best VI players in Europe."

Ben Quilter said: “Having won two World titles in 2010 and 2011 I have been on form and am hoping to add to my medal collection with a European gold at the VI European Championships.”
