The 2010 Volunteer Award
winners have been decided after a distinguished panel met to judge
the impressive array of nominations across 12 categories.
The highly-coveted awards,
which attracted a record 47 nominations this year, were decided
by the BJA’s Board Director Mac Abbots, Human Resources Manager
Tracey Forman, National Volunteer Manager Elaine Down, Dr. Lisa
Allan of the London Olympic Committee of the Olympic Games and
Lisa Wainwright, CEO of Volleyball England.
As one of the highlights
of the domestic calendar, this year’s event will coincide with
the opening day of the women’s GB World Cup on Saturday 2 October
and will be held at Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens.
The Olympic sport of judo
in Britain is blessed with a tireless network of dedicated volunteers
who are the heartbeat of the sport at the grassroots level.
The Awards Evening is British
Judo’s opportunity to pay tribute to our many volunteers and recognise
their dedication, loyalty and continual support at all levels.
National Volunteer Manager
Elaine Down said many nominations caught the eye and merited an
award.
“All the nominations were
of a very high calibre so the winners all did very, very well,”
said Elaine.
“They all deserved to win
but unfortunately we do have to make separations between them
and we had to make some very tough decisions.”
Elaine, who’s also one
of countries top referee’s, places a great deal of importance
on making the volunteers aware of the gratitude everyone in the
sport reserves for them.
“It’s vitally important
to recognise their efforts because without the volunteers supporting
the sport from the grassroots level up to the top we would not
have such a viable success for British judo.
“The youngsters coming
through at the elite level are in grassroots clubs and you need
someone to clean the mats and the keep the club door open. It’s
as important to have those people as it to have officials, coaches
and of the course the players."
