This year’s UK School Games
took place from the 3rd – 6th September in Cardiff, Swansea and
Newport. The judo tournament took place at the Sports Hall
at the University of Swansea.
England’s 24-player team
were on top form winning a total of seven gold, five silver and
nine bronze medals. Wales were close behind finishing second,
followed by Scotland and Northern Ireland in the judo competition.
17-year-old Tom Williams
from Hornchurch in Essex took the gold medal in the -81kg weight
category to add to the silver he took in 2008. The Ford Judo Club
player continues to fulfil a career in judo and is training full
time at Camberley Judo Club.
Defending champion Megan
Henderson competed in the -48kg again this year and won the bronze
medal.
2008 silver medallists
Lewis Keeble (-66kg) and Jessica Mair (-70kg) returned to compete
again this year. Keeble took the gold medal this year, while Mair
won the bronze.
The UK School Games gives
young people from all over the UK the chance to compete in a multi-sport
event like the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games or the Commonwealth
Games. Competitors experience an opening and closing ceremony,
mock doping control and accommodation in a Games village, as well
as the event itself.
The Youth Sport Trust are
responsible for staging the Games, which includes Judo, Table
Tennis , Athletics, Gymnastics, Hockey, Badminton, Swimming, Fencing,
Volleyball and new to this year Track Cycling.
The first ever UK School
Games was hosted in 2006 by Glasgow followed by Coventry in 2007
and Bath in 2008. The Youth Sport Trust secured £2.3 million National
Lottery funding from the Big Lottery fund to support the Games
until 2011.
