GB team prepare for Grand Slam in Japan

A delegation of 25 judoka have travelled to Japan for a three week training camp, where a 21-strong team will compete in the 2009 Tokyo Grand Slam, from Friday 11th - Sunday 13th December.

Olympic medallists from across the World, including Japan’s finest, will be out in force, fighting for their London 2012 qualification through the tough KO system without repechage.

The new world ranking system, announced by the International Judo Federation, started on the 1st January with all Grand Slams, Grand Prix events, World Cups, Masters and World Senior Championships contributing towards London 2012 selection.

Beijing Olympians Euan Burton (-81kg), Sarah Clark (-57kg) and Karina Bryant (+78kg) return to the world stage to represent Great Britain in their respective weight categories.

-70kg fighter Sally Conway has been training in the judo capital since October. Conway has consistently performed well this year and, along with junior player Gemma Howell who is currently out by injury, she finished in 5th place at the prestigious Paris Grand Slam in February.

Two recent bronze medal winners at the U23 European Championships, Gemma Gibbons (-70kg) and Ashley McKenzie (-60kg), have been selected to fight for Britain once again.

Visually impaired Brits, Sam Ingram and Ben Quilter, are using this trip to train alongside the squad in preparation for their major tournaments in the new year.

This will be the fourth and final event in the new IJF grand slam circuit, following the Paris, Moscow and Rio de Janeiro Grand Slams earlier this year.

Despite having automatic qualification for London, this will be the largest team that Britain has sent to one of these events, after a smaller team of 15 competed in the Paris Grand Slam.

Tokyo may have lost to Rio de Janeiro in the 2016 Olympic bid, after going out in the second round poll, but they will not fail to deliver an exciting tournament full of world class judo, as Rio did back in July.
