Eight-strong British team to compete at Swedish European Cup

Britain will field an eight-strong team at the Swedish European Cup on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 in the countries picturesque city of Boras.

Lining up in Sweden will be Ashley McKenzie, winner of the 2010 British Open and German European Cup.

Under 73kg fighter Patrick Dawson will feature after taking silver at the Scottish Open while Bacup Judo Club’s David Groom, who took bronze in Scotland, will compete in the under 81kg category along with Scotland’s Craig Stewart.

Theo Spalding-McIntosh, who in recent years has campaigned in the over 100kg category, will see action in the under 90kg division where he’s picked up bronze medals at the English Senior Open and British Team Championships in 2010.

Under 57kg fighter Gemma Howell has starred on the European Cup circuit in 2010, winning in London, Slovenia and Russia. The 20-year-old will be joined by Kate Walker, the Samurai talent who won the senior under 63kg title at the Scottish Open.

Megan Fletcher, who’s claimed top honours at the 2010 Kent International, English Senior Open and Northern Ireland’s equivalent, will compete in Scandinavia. Fellow under 70kg combatant Scarlett Woolcock was due participate but has withdrawn through an injury sustained at the Scottish Open.

Following the event will be a training camp from Monday 1 to Thursday 4 November. Five additional fighters will be part of the camp as Lewis Keeble, Owen Livesey, Joshua Butler, Kelly Edwards and Gemma Gibbons will join up with the squad.
