Premier League 4 Sport – Stoke City FC Programme Launch

Stoke City was last week the first Premier League Club to launch it's involvement in the Premier League 4 Sport initative.

Present at the launch was Junior World bronze medallist Luke Taylor who took part in a demonstration for young people from the local area, as well as the media and players from Stoke City Football Club, including Carl Dickinson.

Premier League 4 Sport is a new and innovative Government funded project in partnership with the Premier League to promote and develop opportunities for young people to get involved in community based sport in four Olympic disciplines, judo, volleyball, table tennis and badminton.

The initiative will help the Government’s ambition to offer young people five hours of sport a week, as part of its 2012 legacy plans. It also aims to address the drop-off in sports participation when young people leave secondary school and encourage participation in community clubs.

Stoke City FC will be leading on the delivery and promotion of a series of 16 new clubs in the North Stafforshire area in the four sports, to create new and exciting opportunities for young people to experience both recreational and competitive sport.

The new clubs will also encourage involvement from parents and family members, to create a sustainable network of community based clubs that will support the anticipated interest in a variety of Olympic sports in the build up to the London games in 2012.

Stoke City FC’s Community Development Manager, Adrian Hurst, said “We are excited and extremely positive about Stoke City’s involvement in this project. This area has an excellent infrastructure of community sport in place and we aim to support and develop that infrastructure using the Premier League 4 Sport programme.

Daniel Griffin, British Judo’s Premier League manager, said "The launch with Stoke City is the first official club launch within England and I am delighted to say that the Premier League programme will be up and running throughout the country soon".

"Stoke City along with the other 19 Premier League clubs will play a pivotal role in us attracting new players to our sport and potentially future Olympic and Paralympics judoka".

He continued "The Premier League programme will now continue to expand, until all 20 clubs are running successful projects within their areas".
