Britain warmed up for the
European Championships by topping the medal table at the Sarajevo
European Cup in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday 2 and Sunday
3 April.
Nine members of the 19-strong
2011 European Championships squad competed as Britain registered
a seven-medal haul as they claimed four gold medals and three
bronze.
Beijing Olympian’s Sarah Clark and
Winston Gordon each won five contests and four by ippon to win
the -63kg and -90kg categories respectively.
Daniel Williams, 21, impressed
as he reeled off six victories to win the -73kg title.
In the -52kg category Sophie
Johnstone, who entered herself as part of a strong Camberley Judo
Club contingent, received a bye in the first round before chalking
up three wins to take gold.
Bronze medals came courtesy
of Athens Olympian Sophie Cox, who bounced back from a semi-final
defeat to record an ippon victory for a place on the -57kg podium
and Megan Fletcher who achieved the same feat in the -70kg field.
Andrew Burns took the final
bronze medal at -90kg as he won four of five fights having entered
himself into the competition.
Gemma Howell won three
of five fights to take fifth-place in the -63kg division while
Camberley’s Nathon Burns faired the same in -66kg action to finish
seventh.
