Britain tops medal table at Sarajevo European Cup

Britain warmed up for the European Championships by topping the medal table at the Sarajevo European Cup in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April.

Nine members of the 19-strong 2011 European Championships squad competed as Britain registered a seven-medal haul as they claimed four gold medals and three bronze.

Beijing Olympian’s Sarah Clark and Winston Gordon each won five contests and four by ippon to win the -63kg and -90kg categories respectively.

Daniel Williams, 21, impressed as he reeled off six victories to win the -73kg title.

In the -52kg category Sophie Johnstone, who entered herself as part of a strong Camberley Judo Club contingent, received a bye in the first round before chalking up three wins to take gold.

Bronze medals came courtesy of Athens Olympian Sophie Cox, who bounced back from a semi-final defeat to record an ippon victory for a place on the -57kg podium and Megan Fletcher who achieved the same feat in the -70kg field.

Andrew Burns took the final bronze medal at -90kg as he won four of five fights having entered himself into the competition.

Gemma Howell won three of five fights to take fifth-place in the -63kg division while Camberley’s Nathon Burns faired the same in -66kg action to finish seventh.
