Ashley McKenzie finishes fifth at IJF Rotterdam GP

Ashley McKenzie took a credible fifth-place at the IJF Rotterdam Grand Prix on Friday 15 October.

The 21-year-old judoka, who has won European Cup titles in London and Hamburg this year, opened his account in the Netherlands by beating experienced Latvian Dmitrijs Kozlovs.

The Londoner then dispatched fellow prodigy David Asumbani of Georgia. McKenzie missed out a podium finish after losing out to Asumbani’s team-mate and national champion Amiran Papinashvili to finish in fifth-place.

Also in action was Gemma Howell who has claimed three-time European Cup titles this year. The Wolverhampton product had a bye in the first round before fighting to a stalemate against Germany’s Marlen Hein. The bout went down to flags and Hein was awarded the decision.

Norwich judoka Colin Oates competed in the under 66kg category where he had a bye in the first round before slipping to defeat against France’s Pierre Duprat.

Over 78kg fighter Sarah Adlington, who took bronze at the GB World Cup this month, competes on Sunday.
