The first instalment of
this year’s Preparation for Performance training series in the
South East took place at Medway Park Judo Club in Gillingham on
Sunday 12 February.
Despite the big freeze
hitting the sporting schedule across Europe, 86 hardy judoka from
the age of 10 braved the cold snap to make their way to the session
for an excellent day of judo.
The Preparation for Performance
initiative is part of a new British Judo Widening the Market youth
project and is designed to prepare young people for entering into
the Judo England programme both technically and physically.
The training covered ne-waza
(groundwork), tachi-waza (stand-up techniques), circuit training
and gymnastics for judo.
Chris Doherty, 5th Dan
and British Judo’s South East Technical Officer, led the session
which was the first in a block of four with the next instalment
to be held on Saturday 24 March.
"The attendance was
absolutely fantastic, there was a great enthusiasm and excitement
about the session.
"The second block
has already received great interest and we’re already looking
forward to coming back to Medway.”
The second block takes
place on 24 March at 10:00 – 16:30 and is open to all players
aged 10 and above who hold a 5 th mon grade or higher. The session
costs £3.
