The Lancashire trio of
Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic are set
to meet in the judo arena as youngsters from the respective clubs’
Premier League 4 Sport programmes compete in the first event of
its kind at St James CE School & Sports College, Farnworth,
on Thursday 2 December.
As part of the Premier
League 4 Sport programme - which sees each Premiership side stage
satellite clubs which offer judo, badminton, table tennis and
volleyball – the rival teams will be represented by their fledgling
judo players.
Bolton Wanderers Community
Trust and Bolton Judokwai have organised the clash in conjunction
with the Wigan Athletic Community Trust and Blackburn Rovers Community
Trust.
The contests will be observed
by representatives of each club and a senior member of the British
Judo team is expected to make a special appearance.
Nicol Meredith, Premier
League 4 Sport Co-ordinator for Bolton Wanderers, said: “We want
to offer the opportunity for all players involved in the programme
to enter a competition, represent their community and local football
club.
“We also feel this will
give young people something to aspire for as well as creating
a fun sporting environment. The evening will provide an opportunity
for all players to experience competitive judo, learn about being
part of a team and discovering what it is like to compete in front
of a live crowd.”
Wesley Partington, Premier
League 4 Sport Co-ordinator at the Wigan Athletic Community Trust,
said: “This is the first judo competition between three Premier
League sides and we expect to be at a full capacity of participants.”
