Vote now in the 2008-2009 British Judo Player Awards

The shortlist for the 2008-2009 British Judo Player Awards has been announced. The Volunteer & Player Awards return to Birmingham on Saturday 19th September and BJA members are invited to vote for their favourite Players of the Year based on their performance from the 1st July 08 - 30th June 09.

The shortlists were compiled following an open nomination process in the April edition of Matside.

Nominations open on Tuesday 28th July and close on Monday 12th August at midnight.  Vote and also be in with a chance of winning a family ticket to the 2009 GB World Cup.

The Junior Male category includes 2008 World bronze medallist, Luke Taylor; 2008 Junior German Junior “A” Tournament gold medallist, Theo Spalding-McIntosh; German and Polish Junior “A” Tournament bronze medallist, Jean-Rene Badrick; and British Open gold medallist, Ashley McKenzie.

The Junior Female category includes four young British females who have all won British Judo Player Awards in the past. Last year’s winner of this Award, Junior World silver medallist, Ashley Fleming; the 2008 Most Improved Female, Sam Clark, who results this year have included a gold at the Tre-Torri International and bronze at the Sens French International; 2008 World and European Junior bronze medallist and 2009 Junior Russia A Tournament gold medallist, Gemma Howell who in 2006 and 2007 won the Most Improved Female Award; the 2008 Junior European bronze medallist, Kelly Edwards, who won the Junior Female of the Year in 2007, rounds up the shortlist.

The Senior Male of the Year shortlist includes Beijing Olympian Peter Cousins, 2008 Norway World Cup silver medallist, Tre-Torri bronze medallist and last year’s winner, James Millar; Norway World Cup gold medallist, Colin Oates; and Beijing Olympian and 2009 British Open gold medallist Winston Gordon.

The Senior Female of the Year includes 2009 European bronze medallist and Beijing Olympian, Sarah Clark; 2009 Tre-Torri International silver medallist and 2009 German Open gold medallist, Sally Conway; World University Games bronze medallist, Gemma Gibbons; and Beijing Olympian, 2009 British Open gold medallist and 2009 German Open bronze medallist, Karina Bryant.

New Award, VI Player of the Year Award contains the four 2009 Senior VI European medallists, Sam Ingram, Joe Ingram, Ben Quilter and Darren Harris, as well as Daniel Powell, 2009 World Youth Games silver medallist.

As well as the above five awards, on the night Player Awards will also be presented for Players Player of the Year (voted for by the British Squad), Most Improved Male and Female British Squad Players of the Year (voted for by the Performance Directorate), Most Improved Paralympic Squad Player of the Year (voted for by the Performance Directorate), and Masters Player of the Year (voted for by Masters Working Group Party).

The BJA Awards Dinner will be held on the evening of Saturday 19th September at the ICC, Birmingham. Don’t miss your chance to be at the event where as well as the Player Awards, a whole host of Awards will be presented to Volunteers who have been a valuable contribution throughout the last 12 months.

The Awards Dinner coincides with this year’s GB World Cup for men and women.

The evening begins at 7pm with a drinks reception, followed by a four-course sit down meal, with live entertainment plus a disco.

Alternatively reserving a table at the BJA Awards Dinner offers you the chance to enjoy a great night out with a group of friends/colleagues, whilst also celebrating the achievements of the key players and volunteers within British Judo.

A limited number of tickets and tables are available and they will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The deadline for bookings is Friday 21st August
